Biebrza National Park – the largest in Poland – was created to protect Biebrza Marshes – one of the best preserved lowland wet areas and swampy river valleys in Europe. It protects extensive and almost unchanged valley peat bogs with a unique diversity of plant, bird and other animal species and natural ecosystems.
This region is primarily a kingdom of birds, where over 300 species are observed, including almost 200 nesting on the Biebrza River, of which 168 are currently breeding regularly. That is why the Biebrza Valley has been recognized by BirdLife International as a world-class bird sanctuary. The park is also on the list of Ramsar Convention sites.
